Christian Jankowski
Lehrauftrag

Gallery Klosterfelde is pleased to present a new exhibition of Christian Jankowski. The new works in dif-
ferent formats deal with issues of education and the successful positioning of an artist: a videopiece, a
sculpture, and an installation form the background for several situations, such as the exchange between
art students and Jankowski during a workshop, the artist‘s final exams at the academy, and a scrutiny of
different perspectives of artists and scientists.

The banners in the piece Lehrauftrag (2000) stem from a campaign at the technical university in Aachen.
For Jankowski‘s contribution to this encounter between art and science, demonstration banners were
hung in front of the facades of the participating academic institutes. Instead of students‘ protests, how-
ever, they displayed quotes by university staff on them. These scientists had been interviewed by Jan-
kowski before, and had been asked about their opinion on this interdisciplinary event and about their
comprehension of art in general.

The graduating process of an untrained want-to-be artist towards an academically educated artist is
dealt with in the sculpture Diplomarbeit (1998) which was produced at Hamburg art academy.
Part of Diplomarbeit consists of a film which cross-cuts between Jankowski at the time of his accept-
ance at the academy in 1992 and his successful graduation in 1998.

Schulungsfilm (2002) was made during a workshop with art students in Leipzig. Jankowski encouraged
dialogues being held between the students and a partner chosen from the Berlin art world. The result
can be viewed as a tutorial film for artists, in which art critics, curators, artists, and theorists give ex-
amples of how to position oneself successfully in the art world.

Christian Jankowski (b.1968) lives and works in Berlin. Recent solo shows were at the Swiss Institute,
New York, at Galleria Gi Marconi, Milan, De Appel in Amsterdam and the Wadsworth Atheneum in Hard-
ford, CT. Upcoming shows will be at Gallery Michelle Maccarone, New York and at the Whitney Biennale, New York.
